The word count, does it mean that it’s not a must that I must reach 1000 words?
Good evening, I would like to ask if the word count being 1000 words, includes our names and Nysc deployment.
Topic : Climate change and disaster management in Nigeria
The weather in Nigeria seems to be part of the problem we are facing here. It has caused a lot of harm as market women even curse weather as if it’s a person . It’s being hot lately, especially in north were the sun seem to have find it’s resting place . I was opportune to browse last year November on why the sun outshined our favorable harmattan recalling it was festive period and I got some results that looked right . In there they wrote “The hot weather is not only in Nigeria but all over the world and it was due to excess burning”. I also learnt that foreign country like USA didn’t get enough dew and chilling weather like previous years .
The Climate change is a threat multiplier for disasters in Nigeria. It has caused a lot of problems like :
a)Drought due to Dey weather and no frequent rain falls
b)Flooding due to the rain that follows after hot weather and that is eligible of destroying lands and properties
c)Heatwaves and Disease outbreak
The fact that civilians are complaining concerning all this and recalling we have able agencies that can tackle this still makes it doubt if our leaders are actually facing this stuffs . We have the National Emergency Management Agency(NEMA) and we trust them so well in handling cases like this but nevertheless we’ve being led to face some challenges like :
a)Weak early warning systems : Many communities get flood alerts too late or not at all.
b)Poor urban planning:Building on waterways in cities like Onitsha and Lagos worsens flooding.
c)Underfunding:NEMA and SEMA often lack equipment and funds for rapid response.
d)Low public awareness: Many citizens don’t know evacuation routes or basic preparedness steps.
e)Reactive approach:Government often acts after disasters instead of investing in prevention.
With all those listed above you could tell that we just leaving in ignorance while some are just confuse and wants this agencies to fight their way through to finding solutions for the outlined problem.
The Way Forward should be :
i)To Strengthen Early Warning: Expanding NIMET and NIHSA flood forecasts via radio, SMS, and town criers in local languages.
ii)Climate-Resilient Infrastructure: Building proper drainage, dredge rivers, and enforce bans on building in floodplains. The Eko Atlantic sea wall is one example.
iii)Community-Based Adaptation: Training local volunteers in disaster response. Programs like NEMA’s “Grassroots Emergency Volunteer Corps” should be scaled.
iv)Afforestation: Reviving the Great Green Wall project in the North to combat desertification.
v)Policy Enforcement: implementing the Climate Change Act 2021 and penalize environmental violations.
vi)Funding: Increasing budgetary allocation to NEMA and access global climate funds like the Green Climate Fund.
In Conclusion I would say with better planning, funding, and community involvement, Nigeria can reduce losses and build resilience.
