The YouthSync Student Essay Competition 2026 invites middle and high school students worldwide to share their ideas on how artificial intelligence could shape their lives, communities and the future of their generation.

About the Competition

YouthSync is bringing together perspectives from students across different schools, regions and cultural backgrounds through its 2026 Student Essay Competition.

The competition focuses on how young people understand and think about the growing influence of artificial intelligence.

Submissions will be independently reviewed by a four-person judging panel with academic backgrounds spanning:

  • Yale University
  • Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  • Cornell University
  • Tufts University

The organisers are interested in hearing students’ individual perspectives and understanding the reasoning behind their ideas.

Essay Topic

The official essay theme is:

“Artificial Intelligence and Our Future”

The competition explains that artificial intelligence is becoming an increasingly important part of how people:

  • Learn
  • Work
  • Communicate
  • Create
  • Make decisions

Students are asked to respond to the following question:

How do you think AI will affect your life and the lives of people around you?

Participants may approach the question from any direction.

For example, you may:

  • Draw from your own experiences.
  • Examine something you have observed in your school.
  • Explore something you have noticed in your community.
  • Discuss how AI could affect your future.
  • Explore an aspect of AI’s future that you believe deserves greater attention.

The organisers specifically state that they are interested in your perspective and the reasoning behind it, rather than requiring you to take a particular position on artificial intelligence.

Eligibility

The YouthSync Student Essay Competition is open to:

  • Middle school students worldwide
  • High school students worldwide

Students from different countries, schools, regions and cultural backgrounds are welcome to participate.

There is no entry fee.

Essay Requirements

Applicants must follow these requirements:

  • The essay must address the theme “Artificial Intelligence and Our Future.”
  • Maximum length is 500 words.
  • The essay must be written in English.
  • Students may approach the topic from any direction.
  • The essay should present the student’s own perspective and reasoning.
  • Students may draw on personal experiences, school observations, community experiences or their views about the future of AI.

Important

The competition is not asking students to support or oppose artificial intelligence. Instead, YouthSync wants to understand what students think about AI and why they think that way.

There are nine award recipients across three categories.

Distinction Award

$100 each — 3 recipients

Merit Award

$50 each — 5 recipients

In addition to the monetary awards, all award-winning essays will be published on the YouthSync website.

Judging Panel

Entries will be independently reviewed by a four-person judging panel.

The judges have academic backgrounds spanning:

  • Tufts University

The competition therefore gives participating students an opportunity to have their ideas considered by a panel with academic backgrounds from these institutions.
