1. DRESS FORMALLY AND APPROPRIATELY
As negligible as this may sound, this is one important part of your interview. You are advised to always dress well and as for formally as possible as this shows your intentionality and deliberateness as regards the scholarship. It also shows your respect for the interviewers and will help them also regard ou in that manner.
It is always better to get a comment saying ‘You really came prepared for this interview’ than to get a comment sarcastically referring to how shabbily you are dressed. You do not want to start your scholarship interview on the wrong foot.
2. BE PREPARED
The saying ‘Practice makes perfect’ may be cliché but it has proven to be very effective in achieving results. Never go into an interview unprepared. Have rehearsals, set practice questions for yourself, rehearse your answers over and again until you are confident in them. You can also make use of family or friends to serve as your interviewers. Let them score you, correct your mistakes and point out your strengths.
Another way to prepare yourself to have a successful interview is to contact previous awardees of the scholarship program and ask them for tips. Reach out to them and ask for the kind of questions to expect, the kind of answers to give and how to answer them.
3. RESEARCH
When preparing for interviews and getting ready for the usual questions such as the ones asking for one’s achievements, aspirations and why you think you are the best fit for the scholarship, many students forget to research about the organization, foundation or even the fellowship offering the scholarship. Hence, once a question arises relating to the organization, they are lost. This is not a good look and it can seriously hamper with your scholarship chances.
To avoid this, read up on the organization, their vision, mission, passion and tailor your answers to fit yourself into the organization’s purpose. This makes it easier for the scholarship body to see you as a suitable candidate to receive their scholarship.

4. BE CONCISE
Scholarship interviews are usually planned to accommodate quite a number of applicants hence making the interview sessions short. To maximize your time, make sure your answers are concise and straightforward. Ensure to employ the Bottom line Up-front (BLUF) strategy to drive home your points and give your answers in as few statements as possible.
Factor this in your rehearsals and put down what you would want to say in bullet points.
5. BE CONFIDENT IN YOURSELF
Your confidence in an interview is a big plus to as it affects how your performance is going to turn out. Do not panic as the interview is just a ladder to your final victory. In as much as you are prepared, believe in yourself, trust your abilities and be confident that the scholarship is yours for the taking.
In the event of questions that were not part of what you prepared for, do not panic, simply pivot and find a way to link the answer into what you practiced for while reasserting why you are the best candidate for the scholarship. Do not fret, be confident!!
