Are you a passionate undergraduate or graduate student in Africa with bold ideas to solve the continent’s energy crisis? Do you want to turn your innovative concepts into real, bankable solutions while competing for substantial cash prizes and industry recognition?
The TID 5.0 Energy Startup Challenge, organized by The Industry Discourse (TID) in partnership with SPE UNILAG Student Chapter, is now open for registration. This is one of the biggest student-led multidisciplinary energy innovation competitions in Africa, offering a platform for young talents to develop scalable solutions to Africa’s pressing energy poverty challenges.
Why This Competition Matters
Africa faces a massive energy deficit — over 600 million people lack reliable electricity, and more than 1 billion lack clean cooking solutions. This competition empowers the next generation of energy entrepreneurs, engineers, policymakers, and innovators to create practical, investable solutions that address real-world problems in finance, productive energy use, and clean cooking transition.

- Undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled in any African university (or studying abroad)
- Teams of 3 to 4 members

- Multidisciplinary teams are highly welcomed (Engineering, Business, Economics, Law, Social Sciences, Design, Public Policy, etc.)
Proof of enrollment (student ID or official letter) will be required at the Semifinal stage.
Case Study Topics (Choose One)
Teams must develop solutions around one of the following real-world energy challenges:
- The Last-Mile Energy Finance Gap
How can we design financing mechanisms that make clean energy affordable and accessible for underserved populations? - Productive Energy, Productive Economies
How can we design energy solutions that directly unlock income-generating activities in rural and peri-urban communities? - The Clean Cooking Transition at Scale
What combination of technology, distribution, financing, or behaviour change can drive a genuine clean cooking transition in Africa?
