The Pan-African Organization for Health, Education and Research (POHER) Scholars’ Program 2027 is a research mentorship programme for medical students enrolled in medical schools across Africa. The programme is designed to introduce scholars to scientific research, provide career guidance, develop research skills, and connect participants with medical research mentors and peers across Africa.

Important: This is a research and career mentorship programme, not a medical school scholarship. POHER does not pay medical school tuition.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must:

  1. Be currently enrolled in an African medical school.
  2. Be studying an MD, MBBS, MBChB or equivalent medical programme.
  3. Be interested in research.
  4. Have an expected medical school graduation date after January 2028.
  5. Demonstrate leadership potential.
  6. Be motivated to receive research and career mentorship.
  7. Be committed to actively participating in POHER Scholars’ Program activities throughout the year.
  8. Be willing to participate in and present at Work-in-Progress virtual meetings.
  9. Be willing to attend and assist with POHER educational webinars.

Prior research experience is not required.

Programme Activities

POHER Scholars will participate in activities designed to develop their research and professional skills, including:

Scientific Research Training

Scholars are introduced to key principles of scientific research and receive guidance on developing their research and career interests.

Work-in-Progress Meetings

Scholars present their research ideas and work to experts and fellow scholars, creating an environment for learning, feedback and collaboration.

Research Conference Support

Scholars receive guidance on attending research conferences and developing abstracts and manuscripts.

Research and Professional Networking

The programme provides opportunities to build professional relationships with peers and mentors across Africa and collaborate on research and other academic projects.

Educational Opportunities

Scholars can attend an online global health course and other career-related courses.

Annual Symposium

Scholars have opportunities to help organise POHER’s Annual Medical Research and Mentorship Symposium for African biomedical trainees.

Research and Career Development

The programme is designed to help medical students develop long-term careers as clinician-researchers. POHER’s mentorship programme provides foundational knowledge in clinical research and good clinical practice, while giving scholars opportunities to present their research progress to an expert mentor network.

Scholars can also develop professional networks through professional organisations, patient advocacy training and collaboration with researchers and peers across Africa.
