How to win scholarship with low CGPA

CAN I WIN A SCHOLARSHIP WITH A LOW CGPA?

You see, I am not here to motivate you nor try to downplay the importance of having a good CGPA.

Like, I do say, if you can get a strong and high CGPA, it is an added advantage as a student looking for a scholarship abroad.

However, life happens, and there are instances where our efforts seem not to reflect on our CGPA.

So, can EMEKA get a scholarship with a low CGPA? Read through to find the answer.

There is higher education more accessible to a broader range of applicants. For example, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Wichita State University both accept a minimum GPA of 2.75, offering opportunities for students who may have had academic challenges but still demonstrate potential.

Arkansas Tech University has a lower threshold with a minimum GPA of 2.5, while Mississippi State University also considers applicants with a 2.75 GPA. Illinois State University and the Milwaukee School of Engineering require a minimum GPA of 2.8, and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse admits students with at least a 2.85 GPA.

STEPS TO WINNING WITH A LOW CGPA

Silence that FEAR – If you are afraid or having fear of rejections or people not replying to your cold emails, then you are not ready yet. You have to silence that demon called *FEAR, until then, can you start applying.

Look for Scholarships That Don’t focus on CGPA

Some scholarships prioritize leadership, community service, talents, financial needs, or unique experiences over academic performance. Search for:
Need-based scholarships

Essay-based scholarships

Extracurricular achievement scholarships

Scholarships for specific talents (e.g., sports, music, arts)

Highlight Your Strengths
If your grades are low, compensate by showcasing other strengths:

Work Experience: Jobs, internships, or volunteer work can prove your skills.

Leadership Roles: Clubs, organizations, or student government positions matter.

Personal Story: If you’ve overcome hardship, use it to your advantage in applications.

One important detail you must know is that joining a community service or volunteering role is very useful and important. The more you do and join, the merrier. Now, you can use those activities to boost your documents. I have seen situations where people of lower CGPA get scholarships before those with high CGPA. your extracurricular activities matter a lot.

Write a Strong Personal Statement

Your essay is your chance to stand out. Focus on:
Growth and Improvement: Explain why your CGPA is low and how you’ve learned from it.

Your Passion & Goals: Show how the scholarship will help you contribute to society.

Unique Qualities: What makes you different from other applicants?

Get Powerful Recommendation Letters

Ask professors, employers, or mentors who can vouch for your skills, work ethic, and potential beyond grades.

Improve Your Academic Profile

If possible, take extra courses, online certifications, or standardized tests (like GRE, GMAT, or IELTS) to show academic ability beyond your CGPA.

One most important thing I would lay emphasis on is getting skills and certification that are relevant to your field. Don’t just go about undertaking several certifications that we both know might not be useful or needed towards your advancement.

Also, publish books – You can publish a journal about your area of interest. You can co-author with your lecturer. That your undergraduate project, why don’t you make it as one of your publications. Edit and put in the necessary details, and you are good to go.

Apply for Multiple Scholarships

Don’t rely on just one opportunity – apply to as many as possible to increase your chances. Out of many applications you put there, 2 of 40 will be successful.
