Application for the UBA National Essay Competition 2025

About the Essay Competition:

The National Essay Competition, targeted at senior secondary school students in Nigeria, is organised annually as part of UBA Foundation’s Education Initiative. The competition is designed to promote the culture of reading, while encouraging healthy intellectual engagement among senior secondary students in Nigeria and across Africa. The essay also aims to promote the reading culture and encourage healthy and intellectual competition amongst secondary school students in Nigeria and across Africa. 

Benefits of the Essay Competition:

The winners of this essay competition will receive the following benefits:

• Winner – N10 million educational grant to any African University 

• 1st Runner-Up – N7.5 million educational grant to any African University 

• 2nd Runner-Up – N5 million educational grant to any African University 

Eligibility Criteria for the Essay Competition:

Interested applicants for this essay competition MUST fulfill the following requirements:

• Applicants MUST be a Nigerian Senior Secondary School Student
• Applicants MUST complete the application form through the link provided
• Applicants MUST upload a handwritten essay of 750 words max (not typed)
• Applicants MUST upload a copy of recent passport photograph
• Applicants MUST upload a scanned copy of Birth Certificate/National ID/ International Passport

• A scanned copy of Birth Certificate/National ID/ International Passport

Selection Procedure:

• All entries will be reviewed by a distinguished panel of judges comprising professors from reputable Nigerian universities. From these, 12 finalists will be shortlisted for the next stage.

• The finalists will then be invited to the UBA Head Office in Lagos to participate in a second and final round of supervised essay writing. The panel will assess these submissions and select the top three winners.

Things to note: 

• All incomplete and/or duplicate entries will be disqualified.
• Ensure your full name is written on your handwritten essay before uploading.
• The title of the attachments should be the applicant’s name and the name of the document being attached e.g (John Doe – Passport Photograph)

Application Deadline:

Application for the UBA National Essay Competition 2025 are open for entries until the 12th of October, 2025. Early applications are highly encouraged.
