Nelson Mandela Essay Prize Competition 2026 – Win Up to $5,000 USD

The prestigious Nelson Mandela Essay Prize Competition 2026 is now open for submissions. Organized by the Academics Stand Against Poverty (ASAP) in partnership with Yale University’s Global Justice Program, the University of Lusaka, and the University of Zambia, this annual competition continues Nelson Mandela’s legacy of leadership, justice, and transformative ideas.

This year’s edition invites bold, original essays that offer specific, actionable proposals to address some of Africa’s most pressing challenges. It is a unique opportunity for thinkers across the continent to contribute practical solutions that can drive real change.

Who Can Participate?

  • Open to citizens of African countries (with or without a PhD degree)
  • Joint submissions by two eligible authors are welcome
  • No restriction on academic background — both emerging and established voices are encouraged

Competition Themes

Essays should focus on one or more of the following priority areas and present specific, actionable proposals:

  • Climate change resilience
  • Economic empowerment
  • Healthcare systems
  • Education
  • Digital transformation
  • Gender equality
  • Peace and security

The strongest entries will go beyond diagnosis — they must offer clear, realistic, and innovative solutions that can be implemented at local, national, or regional levels.

Prize and Benefits

  • Total Prize Pool: USD $5,000
  • Up to three winning essays will share the prize money
  • Winning essays will receive wide recognition and dissemination through ASAP’s global network

Essay Guidelines

  • Length: 4,000 – 8,000 words
  • Format: Follow the Journal ASAP guidelines (available on the ASAP website)
  • Essays must be anonymized for blind review (do not include your name on the essay document)
  • In your submission email, include:
    – Your name(s)
    – University or organizational affiliation
    – Essay title
