About the competition:

The Asido Foundation envisions a Nigerian society in which all persons will enjoy optimal mental health regardless of age, gender, socio-economic status, religious creed, or ethnicity. The Jemila Abubakar Essay Competition is an annual essay competition organized in memory of Miss Jemila Abubakar, the pioneer program manager of Asido Foundation who passed after a brief illness in July 2020.

The competition is opened to undergraduates in Nigerian tertiary institutions (universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, monotechnics, school of nursing) and the theme will always be on a topical mental health issue.

Theme of the Essay competition:

The theme of the Jemila Abubakar Asido Foundation Essay Competition for this year is titled:

Bridging the gap: Innovative solutions for mental health support in African tertiary institutions.

Eligibility Criteria for the competition: 

• Applicants should be an undergraduate in any Nigerian tertiary institution 
• Applicants must be able to provide proof of studentship
• Applicants must sign the Asido Foundation’s Unashamed pledge (asidofoundation.com/unashamed)

Instructions for the competition:

• The essay word count should range from a minimum of 750 and a maximum of 1000 words
• The essay should be in the Microsoft Word Doc format
• You are required to upload a scanned copy of a recent photograph, proof of studentship and a certificate of your unashamed pledge.
• Submitting an AI-generated essay and plagiarism in ANY FORM will lead to automatic disqualification

The Top 3 entries of the Asido Foundation Essay Competition will be awarded cash prizes:

• Prizes for the Top three:
  • 1st place: N200,000
  • 2nd place N150,000
  • 3rd place N100,000
• Top 15 entries will benefit from a mentorship program.

Application for the 5th Edition of Jemila Abubakar Memorial Essay Competion (JAME) opens on the 6th of November and closes on the 6th of December, 2024 (11:59pm).
