The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has released the guidelines for its ASUU Scholarship Scheme, providing financial support to indigent students studying in Nigerian public universities.
The scholarship is worth ₦200,000 per beneficiary, with two beneficiaries to be selected from each ASUU branch/university.
The scheme is intended specifically for indigent students who are registered at universities with recognized ASUU branches and have demonstrated good academic performance.
According to the document issued by the ASUU National Secretariat, Comrade Festus Iyayi Complex, University of Abuja, Airport Road, F.C.T. Abuja, the Trustees and Principal Officers approved the scholarship scheme at a meeting held at the National Secretariat on Saturday, 7 December 2024.

The applicant must be a registered student of a university with a recognized ASUU branch.

These are the stated criteria for the award.

The scholarship is administered through ASUU branches across universities.
The guidelines state that:
- The award will be for established indigent students from each branch.
- Each ASUU branch shall constitute a committee to select the awardees.
- Each branch shall make a well-advertised call for applications.

Required Application Documents
Applicants are required to submit an application letter of not more than two (2) pages.
The application letter must include:
Name of candidate
Course and year of study
State of origin
The application letter must also be accompanied by the following documents:
- Current Identity Card
A photocopy of the candidate’s current identity card.
- Letter From Head of Department
A letter from the candidate’s current Head of Department, including current information on the candidate’s CGPA for the preceding academic session.

Two (2) current passport photographs.
Applicants should therefore make sure all four supporting documents are available when submitting their application.
Important: Application Is Through Your ASUU Branch
This is an important part of the scheme.
The document does not provide a single central online application portal for students.
Instead, each ASUU branch is responsible for:
Advertising the call for applications
Receiving/interacting with applicants
Constituting its selection committee
Conducting the selection/interview process
Selecting two candidates
Presenting the selected candidates to Congress
Forwarding the selected names to the ASUU National Secretariat
Therefore, students should watch for the announcement from the ASUU branch in their university and follow the application instructions issued by their branch.
ASUU’s official website also lists scholarship activities among its services and identifies the National Secretariat at the University of Abuja.
Deadline for ASUU Branches
The document states that:
Branches are expected to complete the selection process and forward the names of the awardees on or before 30th September, 2026.
Important distinction
The 30 September 2026 date is specifically stated as the deadline for branches to complete the selection process and forward the names of awardees.
Individual university branches may therefore announce their own application deadlines before 30 September to allow enough time for screening, interviews and submission to the National Secretariat.

If your university has a recognized ASUU branch, check with your branch immediately for its application announcement and internal deadline.
The branch-level selection process and submission of awardee names must be completed on or before 30 September 2026.
