For most scholarship committees, this is one of the first things being read when considering applicants for a scholarship. It is used to assess your eligiblity, originality and need for the scholarship. There is no rigid way to write an SOP. A SOP is to be tailored to the specific scholarship program you are applying to which could be merit-based, research-based or need based.

Be creative when you write this and it is recommended that it should be between 400 and 500 words although most scholarships stipulate their word count limit which must not be exceeded.
