Scholarship Details

Introduction

The 2026 NNPC–SNEPCo National University Scholarship is inviting applications from qualified Nigerian undergraduate students studying full-time at public universities in Nigeria.

The scholarship is offered by Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited (SNEPCo), on behalf of itself, Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, and its co-venture partners. The programme aims to promote academic excellence and improve the skills of young Nigerians by providing financial assistance throughout their undergraduate studies.

Successful applicants receive a yearly scholarship grant from their second year of study until the completion of their undergraduate degree, subject to the programme’s academic and other award conditions.

The scholarship is merit-based and open to eligible students enrolled in courses accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) at public Nigerian universities.

Female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

Benefits

The 2026 NNPC–SNEPCo National University Scholarship offers the following benefits:

  • Annual financial support: Successful applicants receive a yearly scholarship grant.
  • Support throughout undergraduate studies: The award is renewable through graduation, subject to the scholarship conditions.
  • Financial assistance for full-time university education: The programme supports eligible undergraduates attending recognised public universities in Nigeria.
  • Consistent scholarship support: SNEPCo states that it is committed to providing a consistent aid package throughout the undergraduate years, although the package may be affected if the beneficiary’s circumstances do not meet the programme’s requirements.
  • Merit-based recognition: The selection process includes eligibility screening, a monitored computer-based test, and academic verification.

The scholarship’s exact monetary value is not specified in the published announcement. Applicants should therefore consult the official scheme information rather than rely on unverified figures circulating online.

The award is renewable for the duration of the recipient’s undergraduate programme, including programmes longer than the usual four years, provided the student meets the requirements and does not repeat a year. The scholarship expires when the course for which it was awarded is completed.

Eligibility

To qualify for the 2026 NNPC–SNEPCo National University Scholarship, applicants must meet the following conditions.

1. Nigerian citizenship

Applicants must be Nigerian citizens. Permanent residents who are not Nigerian citizens are not eligible.

Nigerians living abroad may apply if they have gained admission into and are attending a recognised public university in Nigeria.

2. Full-time undergraduate status

Applicants must be full-time undergraduate students currently in their second year (200 level) at a public Nigerian university recognised by the NUC.

The scholarship does not cover part-time students, students in vocational schools, or students enrolled in degree-awarding institutions that are not recognised public universities.

Students in remedial or year-zero programmes are also ineligible.

3. Academic performance

Applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.5 on a 5.0 grading scale, or the equivalent under another grading system.

Recipients must continue to maintain a minimum CGPA of 3.5 per academic session to retain the scholarship.

4. Existing oil and gas scholarships

Applicants must not already be beneficiaries of another scholarship provided by an organisation in the oil and gas industry, whether national or international.

The scheme’s FAQ clarifies that receiving financial support or a scholarship from an organisation outside the oil and gas industry does not automatically disqualify an applicant.

5. Recognised university

Applicants may attend any eligible federal or state public university in Nigeria recognised by the NUC.

The scholarship is not available to students attending private universities or other institutions that do not meet the programme’s public-university requirement.

6. Age requirement

The programme does not specify an age limit.

7. Previous applications

The scheme’s FAQ states that applicants who have applied before cannot apply again this year. Anyone who has previously applied should confirm their eligibility with the programme administrators before proceeding.

8. Female applicants

Female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

Selection Criteria

The scholarship selection process involves several stages.

  1. Application deadline: Applications must be received through the official scholarship portal no later than the specified deadline.
  2. Eligibility screening: Only candidates who meet the eligibility criteria will be invited to take the monitored computer-based test.
  3. Computer-based test: Only shortlisted candidates will receive examination details.
  4. State-based shortlisting: The top 10 candidates from each of Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory will be shortlisted for academic verification before scholarship offers are made.
  5. Academic verification: Applicants’ academic results and supporting documents will be checked. Candidates found to have falsified results or documents will be disqualified.
  6. Final notification: Only candidates who successfully satisfy the selection requirements will be contacted regarding the scholarship award.

All successful scholars must maintain the required academic performance and comply with the terms of the award to continue receiving support.

If you fail to meet the academic requirements, cease to be a registered student, or decide not to accept the award, the related scholarship agreement becomes null and void.

What if I interrupt my studies or repeat a year?

Continuation generally depends on satisfactory academic progress. The programme states that each case involving an interruption or repeated year will be considered carefully in light of the student’s circumstances.

However, the scholarship FAQ also states that the award covers each year of a longer-than-usual programme provided the student does not repeat any year. Applicants should seek clarification from the administrators if their circumstances change.

When does the award expire?

The award expires when the student completes the course for which the scholarship was granted.

Will students on longer programmes receive support for every year?

Yes. The scholarship can cover every year of a programme regardless of its length, provided the student does not repeat any year and continues to satisfy the award conditions.

The FAQ states that a scholarship lost for any reason cannot be awarded again to the same recipient.

Can I transfer the scholarship to another university?

No. The offer cannot be transferred to another university or course of study.
